A First-Timer's Guide to Mom's: What to Order (From the People Who Cook It)

A page of omelets, eight burgers, five skillets — first visits can get overwhelming. We asked our own crew what they'd put in front of someone walking in for the very first time.

A First-Timer's Guide to Mom's: What to Order (From the People Who Cook It)

Every week we watch it happen: the door swings, the menu opens, and ten pages of comfort food stare back. So here's the short list — the plates our own cooks and servers steer first-timers toward at all four locations.

If you're here before noon

Start with the most-ordered plate in the building: Biscuits & Gravy, buttery scratch biscuits under creamy sausage gravy. If you're properly hungry, the Meat Lover's Skillet is the kitchen's pride — two eggs over hash browns with cheddar-jack, ham, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomato.

Want the full tour? The open-face biscuit breakfast gets you sausage patties and white gravy, two eggs and three silver dollar pancakes all on one ticket.

"Order like a regular on your very first visit — that's the goal."

If you're here for lunch or supper

The answer nine times out of ten: Chicken Fried Steak. Hand-breaded, fried golden, under country gravy, with sides and a hot roll. Its sibling, the Chicken Fried Chicken, converts anyone on the fence.

Burger people should go straight for Mom's Famous Signature Cheeseburger — a half-pounder with American cheese, grilled onions and a fried egg — or the Open Face Chili Cheeseburger if you brought an appetite and don't mind a fork.

Pro moves from the regulars

Make any burger a combo with a drink and fries. Swap fruit for fries if you're pretending to be sensible (most folks aren't). And whatever you order, say yes when they ask about coffee — the pot has been on since 6 AM and it's never once been handed back.

Bring the kids without fear: plates for kids 12 and under come with fries or fruit.

Everything above is on the menu right now, at all four locations.
